SEKAPARK, Kocaeli – Smart City Lighting Ecosystem by OptoSmart
Project Overview
Commissioned by the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, OptoSmart successfully deployed an advanced LoRaWAN (868 MHz) smart city lighting system across SEKAPARK. Spanning approximately 580 decares, SEKAPARK is recognized as one of Kocaeli’s most prominent urban parks and a central event hub for the Marmara region. This large-scale infrastructure project encompasses 820 energy-saving luminaires mounted across 460 lighting poles, delivering unprecedented efficiency, visibility, and control to the area.
Network Infrastructure: Star Topology & OLIOS Management
To guarantee seamless communication across the expansive park, the ecosystem is built on a highly reliable star network topology. The field data from all 820 luminaires is securely transmitted through 5 dedicated Gateways. This data is routed directly to the OLIOS application server, which is securely hosted on the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality’s internal servers. This localized integration ensures real-time control, precise monitoring, and strict data security.
The Core Technology: LoRaWAN POINODE
At the heart of the SEKAPARK infrastructure is the LoRaWAN POINODE, a smart city lighting control unit designed to operate on 230V AC. It features dimming capabilities for advanced energy efficiency and centralized lighting management.

Advanced Sensor Intelligence
The POINODE units deployed on the luminaires are equipped with advanced sensors to ensure autonomous operation, maximum energy savings, and real-time fault detection.
| Sensor / Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| RTC (Real-Time Clock) | Keeps accurate track of time independently even during network outages, ensuring that pre-programmed time-based lighting schedules are executed without interruption. |
| Tilt Sensor | Monitors the physical orientation of the pole or fixture, instantly triggering an alert to the central management system if a collision, tilt, or severe structural displacement occurs. |
| Power Measurement | Continuously monitors electrical parameters like voltage, current, and power consumption to report accurate energy usage and detect potential fixture malfunctions. |
| LDR (Light Dependent Resistor) | Detects ambient light levels to allow the POINODE controller to automatically turn the streetlights on at sunset and off at sunrise. |
| GPS Module | Automatically detects the geographical coordinates of the POINODE controller to report its position to the map-based central management system and ensures precise time synchronization. |
